As you know, the people of Colorado made their voice heard by voting yes on Proposition 117. Their message was clear: they’ve had enough of politicians using loopholes to get around our Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights (TABOR).
Coloradans understand what we signed up for with TABOR: we know that it means putting any tax increase on the ballot – that’s the point, and that’s why we voted for it.
I’m writing to you today to ask that you respect our wishes. Historically, lawmakers have worked to circumvent TABOR by any means they could find, from sneaky loopholes to thinly veiled measures to weaken it. I implore you: do not join their ranks.
Instead, I urge you to respect the decision made at the ballot and trust us to exercise the rights we’ve earned. If there is a need to raise funds for a public expense, make the case to the voters and let us decide for ourselves at the ballot box.
If Coloradans are convinced by your argument, we will gladly approve the needed funds.
