With Title 42 expiring, Washington must take REAL steps to address the crisis on our border.

Dear Legislator:

Title 42 just expired. News reports estimate there are 40,000 migrants in Mexico waiting to enter the U.S.

Title 42 is a shortcut for apprehending migrants. But the thoroughness of the normal removal process allows us to deter repeat crossers with fees and criminal prosecution. We need a new border security plan.

Congress must take emergency action and pass the following legislation to provide a real post-Title 42 solution to this crisis:

Bipartisan Border Solutions Act
- Establish at least four regional processing centers in high traffic sectors of U.S. Border Patrol to better confront the migrant influx along the southwestern border
- Increase staffing and improve interagency coordination
- Prioritize the adjudication of new asylum cases during surges to avoid further inflating the immigration court backlog and delaying final decisions
- Authorize 3-year pilot programs to streamline asylum screenings and adjudications without compromising due process
- Improve DHS coordination with NGOs and local governments to reduce burdens on local communities
Border Patrol Enhancement Act
- Create a mechanism for determining the precise number of border patrol officers to be hired so that our border is properly manned
- Create an emergency reserve of 2,500 additional agents to help mitigate surges
- Increase pay for all positions, including a mandatory minimum 14% increase for journeyman positions, to increase officer satisfaction and retention
Border Visibility and Security Act
- Build appropriate technological and tactical infrastructure, including a 700-mile-long border highway
- Erect cost-effective physical barriers where practical to facilitate apprehension of undocumented border crossers
Border Response Resilience Act
- Create metrics for determining when a migration surge is occurring
- Create a reserve fund and plan for requesting and disbursing interagency personnel to better manage said surges
