Call Our National Debt What It Is-- A National Security Threat

I am writing to express my strong support for House
Concurrent Resolution 24 and to urge you to vote in favor of this measure.

The numbers speak for themselves. The federal national debt
has surpassed $37 trillion — more than 123% of U.S. gross domestic product. In
2024 alone, the federal government spent more than $1 trillion beyond what it
collected. Interest payments on that debt now exceed total U.S. defense
spending, raising serious questions about whether Washington can continue to
fund core national priorities. And over $8 trillion of that debt is held by
foreign investors.

HCR 24 correctly frames this as a national security issue,
not just a fiscal one. When adversarial nations hold that level of leverage
over American debt, our foreign policy and defense posture are compromised in
ways that are difficult to quantify but impossible to ignore.

The resolution calls on Congress to commit to responsible
budgeting and regular fiscal order — a baseline expectation that should not be
controversial. Resolutions like this one matter because they send a signal from
states to Washington that constituents are paying attention and that the status
quo is not acceptable.

committee.
