Illinois has the highest combined state and local taxes in the nation according to WalletHub. A significant portion of this burden is the 39.2 cents per gallon gasoline tax, second-highest of its kind in the nation.

In 2019, the gas tax was doubled from 19 cents to 38 cents per gallon. The General Assembly also put a mechanism into motion to automatically increase the gas tax every year.

After an election year pause, the Illinois General Assembly is set to raise gas taxes again on New Year’s Day. The state is set to increase the fuel tax on January 1, 2023 by 3.1 cents a gallon, for a total of 42.3 cents per gallon.

Illinois will raise the gas tax for the second time in 6 months on July 1, 2023. If inflation estimates hold, these two automatic hikes will result in an additional 6 cents of gasoline tax increases. A net 138% increase in gasoline taxes for Illinois motorists since 2019.

Also, taxpayers should know Illinois is one of only a few states which also imposes an additional sales tax of 6.25% on all gasoline sales. This double whammy of taxes is especially troubling when gas prices rise due to inflation or market conditions.

Enough is enough. Illinois motorists need real relief from more tax hikes at the pump.

In 2019 Gov. Pritzker and General Assembly members from both parties signed into law a bill doubling the gasoline tax and implementing automatic annual increases tied to inflation.

As a result, Illinoisans have the 2nd highest average combined state and federal gasoline taxes in the nation at 59.56 cents per gallon. Because of automatic annual increases our gas taxes are set to increase another 6 cents per gallon by July 2023.

Illinois residents already pay the highest state and local taxes in the nation. According to WalletHub.com, Illinois had the highest total state and local tax rates on a median U.S. household, at 15.1%, a rate that’s nearly 40% higher than the national average.
