There are over 11,500 homeschoolers in South Dakota. This number continues to grow– more than doubling over the last 10 years. It is clear families are looking for better ways to educate their children and homeschooling is a proven method that
demonstrates both achievement in academics and in life.
We are proud to live and educate our children in a state that values freedom and
protection from government overreach. Our families want and need freedom to choose, which is why we enthusiastically support HB 1020 which will establish an Education Savings Account program in South Dakota.
You may have seen some homeschool advocates say this will invite regulation on
homeschooling. It is crystal clear in the bill that families who choose not to participate
are in no way affected. In fact, the language goes above and beyond to protect both those that participate and those that don’t. And to quell any remaining fears, there is no
evidence that ESA bills restrict homeschool freedom in other states. On the contrary,
states with more robust school choice laws enjoy more unfettered homeschool
freedoms.
Also, you’ve no doubt seen the mass assault being waged by the public-school lobby. They say this program is an attack on the public school system. However, has anyone considered their endless attacks on us? They’ve treated us like an enemy simply because we exercise our God-given right to educate our children. It’s time to support all students, not penalize ones that refuse to be trapped in a system that’s failed them.
We are proud to support HB 1020. With this program being completely optional for
families, our homeschool community will welcome those who have long wished they
could provide the best education for their families.
