I am writing as your constituent to urge you to support
House Bill 609, introduced by Representatives Meredith Craig and David Thomas.

Many Ohioans are surprised to learn that current state law
does not guarantee citizens the right to speak at public meetings — only the
right to attend and listen. That means school boards, local governments, and
other public bodies can take formal action on matters that directly affect our
communities without ever hearing from the people those decisions impact.

HB 609 would change that. By requiring public bodies to
allow commentary and testimony before taking action on any item, this bill
ensures that Ohioans have a meaningful seat at the table in their own
communities. It would also prohibit governing bodies from requiring
pre-registration or prior approval to speak — removing barriers that have long
been used to discourage public participation.

The ability to speak to our government and influence the
decisions that shape our daily lives is not a privilege — it is a cornerstone
of our democracy. HB 609 is a commonsense, bipartisan measure that strengthens
that principle at the most local level, where it matters most.
